Description

This is a 40 year old female from Fairfield, Connecticut, who was diagnosed with left breast DCIS. She was told at another hospital that she had to have a mastectomy since her breast was too small and she would have a poor cosmetic outcome with just a lumpectomy. However, she wanted to save her breast and didn't want a mastectomy. Her left breast was slightly larger and lower before surgery, and I told her we could perform a lumpectomy and oncoplastic reconstruction of the lumpectomy defect by rotating her own breast tissue to fill the area in. This is what was performed and her left breast was also lifted slightly. This gave her a great match between her two breasts. Due to the fact that she had such wide margins and favorable DCIS characteristics, she even avoided radiation therapy. She only has a scar around her nipple/areola and is very pleased with the outcome.
