Scar Treatments

Everyone heals differently and the effects of an injury or surgical scar are always unique.  Poor healing may contribute to scars that are obvious, unsightly, or disfiguring.  Even a wound that heals well can result in a scar that affects your appearance.  Scars may be raised or indented, different in color or texture from surrounding healthy skin, or particularly noticeable due to their size, shape, or location.  Though surgeons cannot fully predict how a scar will heal, certain techniques can be used by a plastic surgeon to improve scarring or revise a scar.

It is important to know that once a scar is present, there is nothing that can fully remove it.  The goal is to make the scar as least noticeable as possible.  Scars can almost always be made narrower, flatter, and with less discoloration.

Depending on the type and location of the scar, you will be treated with one of the following techniques:

Scar Cream with Silicone

Simple topical treatment with SkinMedica Scar Recovery Gel (sold in our office).  This scar recovery gel contains silicone and centelline, two of the only ingredients shown in the scientific literature to improve scar appearance and speed up the maturation of scars.  Silicone sheeting and scar massage can also help improve scar appearance.

Steroid Injections into Scars

Steroid injections directly into scars can help flatten hypertrophic or keloid scars.  This must be performed by an expert since injecting too superficial can cause the skin to break down and injection too deep can cause the fat underneath the shrink (atrophy).

Microneedling for Scars

Dermapen® microneedling treatments – this fractional skin micro needling device leads to collagen and elastin production and subsequent skin remodeling and tightening.

Scar Removal

Scar excision – performed for widened or hypertrophic scars and combined with advanced techniques in wound closure using multiple layers of sutures to give more strength to the scar and decrease the chance of widening.

Flaps for Tight Constricting Scars

Z-plasty – used when a scar is tight and restricting motion.  This technique can also be used to better camouflage some scars in existing lines or creases.

Scars go through a healing process that lasts for up to a year.  Scars will be red for a period of time and be slightly raised.  This improves with time and treatment with SkinMedica Scar Recovery Gel.
