Dr. Jandali works with local Mohs surgeons in Fairfield County and at Yale to coordinate the complete removal of skin cancers in sensitive areas like the face.  The benefit of Mohs in these areas is that the defect is made as small as possible.  Before the Mohs surgery, Dr. Jandali will see you in consultation to discuss the possible types of reconstruction needed.  Sometimes simple closure can be performed, but often a small flap or skin graft needs to be performed to obtain the best cosmetic outcome with the best contour and camouflaging of the scar.  If the skin cancer involves the eyelids or nose, sometimes cartilage has to be taken from the ear to reconstruct and support the overlying tissue. 

Reconstruction after Mohs Surgery

After the Mohs surgery, you will have a dressing placed and then see Dr. Jandali the same day or the next day in the office.  He will evaluate the wound and then finalize the plan for the reconstruction.  The surgery can often be performed in the office procedure room under local anesthesia.  However, larger or more complex reconstructions are performed in the hospital as an outpatient procedure within a few days of the Mohs surgery.
