Breast Reduction Covered by Insurance in Connecticut
Having excessively large breasts can be a physical and mental burden. Patients often have symptoms that start in puberty and continue into adulthood. However, some women's breasts grow after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight gain later in life, and then never return to their normal size. Patients who have excessively large breasts that are out of proportion to the rest of their body are ideal candidates for breast reduction surgery. Dr. Jandali is over 90% successful in getting breast reductions covered by insurance. In addition, Dr. Jandali will work with all insurance companies and fight on the patient's behalf to get their breast reduction completely covered.
Tips for Getting Insurance to Approve Breast Reduction
After your consultation for a breast reduction with Dr. Jandali, our office will ask you to gather certain information that helps the process of insurance approval for the surgery:
- Letter from your ObGyn, primary medical doctor, breast surgeon, dermatologist, or pediatrician. The letter needs to state that you have excessively large breasts that cause back/shoulder/neck pain, painful bra strap grooving, rashes underneath the breasts, difficulty exercising, persistent symptoms despite weight loss/physical therapy/pain medication, and/or difficulty obtaining appropriate bras. (Only have them document what is relevant and true.) The letter needs to state that they think you would benefit from a breast reduction. We also ask that their offices fax any records of any prescription lotions/creams/powders that have been used to treat any rash underneath your breasts.
- Letter from your back doctor (Orthopedic or Neurosurgery). The letter needs to state that you have back pain that is made worse by your excessively large breasts and that you would benefit from a breast reduction.
- Letter from your physical therapist or chiropractor along with any treatment records. The letter needs to state that you have back/shoulder/neck pain that is made worse by your excessively large breasts and that you would benefit from a breast reduction.
- Letter from your acupuncturist along with any treatment records. The letter needs to state that you have back/shoulder/neck pain that is made worse by your excessively large breasts and that you would benefit from a breast reduction.
Breast Reduction Insurance Requirements
In addition to the letters stated above, more and more insurance companies are looking for 6 months or more of treatment records showing that conservative measures such as physical therapy have been tried. In addition, for women over 40 years of age, some insurance companies will want to see a normal mammogram of your breasts within the last 12 months. Finally, many insurance companies require that a certain amount of breast tissue is removed during the surgery. This is their way of preventing women from getting a breast lift (where hardly any tissue is removed) paid for by insurance.
