Problems and Complications with Chin Implants
Chin augmentation on patients with small chins (microgenia) can make a huge difference on the overall appearance of the face. Chin augmentation improves the side profile, smile, and the appearance of the nose. However, I have had many patients come into my office who have had previous chin augmentation, who are incredibly unhappy and wish they had never had it performed. Often, their implant is crooked and off-center, loose and moves around, or is not smooth on the sides and they can see or feel the edge of it.
Chin implants are either inserted through the mouth with an incision between the gums and the lower lip, or through an incision underneath the chin. For those inserted through the mouth, since there are bacteria in the mouth, there is always a risk of infection. For those inserted from underneath the chin, there is a permanent scar there. Another problem with chin implants is that, over time, the pressure from the chin implant causes the underlying bone of the chin to resorb and become thinner. This makes the chin implant move backward and project even less, exactly the opposite of what it is supposed to do.
Chin Augmentation with Juvederm Voluma
Instead of performing chin augmentation with implants, I perform chin augmentations with injectable filler or fat. My injectable of choice is Juvederm Voluma, which is made of hyaluronic acid gel. Juvederm Voluma lasts up to 2 years and can have an amazing result augmenting the chin with no surgery at all. There are no scars and no chance of feeling or seeing the edge of any implant. One syringe usually is sufficient, although sometimes patients come back a few weeks after the first syringe for a second syringe of filler.
Cost of Chin Augmentation with Juvederm Voluma
The cost of a chin augmentation with an implant includes the surgeon’s fee, the cost of the implant, the operating room fee, and the anesthesia fee. When considering the cost of Juvederm Voluma for chin augmentation, it is the cost of the syringe every two years. After doing the math, for the price of a chin implant, patients can often get every other year injections of Juvederm Voluma for about 15 years….. and without the complications or risks of a chin implant.
