Treatments for Lip Lines in Connecticut

Fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, otherwise known as lip lines or smoker’s lines, form in many people. They form after repetitive pursing of the lips, usually from smoking or always using straws. However, everyone develops lines around their mouth to some degree with aging. They are partially camouflaged in men with their beards, making them less obvious. However, in women, they are very visible and lipstick can often “bleed” into them.

Treatments for Lip Wrinkles

Some lip lines are very fine and can be improved with microdermabrasion or chemical peels. Botox injections can be performed for early lip lines and wrinkles. Botox works best to help prevent new lip lines from forming and current ones from getting any deeper. If there are just a few distinct deep lines, these can be filled with Juvederm or Restylane. For moderate lip lines and wrinkles, a new treatment is microneedling to induce collagen formation and tighten the lip skin. In our Connecticut plastic surgery office, microneedling is performed with Dermapen®.

How Microneedling Improves Wrinkles

The Dermapen® device uses a disposable tip which contains 11 very small sterile stainless steel needles. The needles penetrate the skin over and over, causing hundreds of micro-injuries to the dermal layer of the skin. Any injury to the skin causes the body to stimulate its natural healing powers. Therefore, microneedling treatments stimulate growth factor release, fibroblast production, and new collagen and elastin formation. The effect of microneedling is much deeper than microdermabrasion or chemical peels, which only affect the outer layer of the dermis. The depth of the Dermapen treatments can be adjusted and customized to each patient based on the severity of the lip wrinkles and the thickness of the skin.

Microneedling for Wrinkles Around Mouth

Dermapen® microneedling is used for the treatment of lip lines and smoker’s lines due to its ability to stimulate new collagen formation and tighten the skin. Results are seen immediately and the skin feels and looks tighter. More importantly, the skin will continue to improve over the 6-8 weeks after each treatment. This is the amount of time required for new collagen formation and skin remodeling. A series of 3-4 treatments is recommended, spaced 1 month apart from each other. The procedure is performed in our Fairfield County office and takes about 30 minutes to perform.
