New “Gummy Bear” Silicone Gel Breast Implant Gets FDA Approval
New Gummy Bear Breast Implants Approved
The FDA recently approved Mentor’s cohesive silicone gel breast implant, the MemoryShape implant. This breast implant is also known as the “gummy bear” implant, due to the silicone maintaining its natural teardrop shape.
Mentor's MemoryShape breast implants are approved for breast augmentation in women at least 22 years old and reconstruction in women of any age. The implants have been approved for more than a decade outside of the United States. Their uniquely formulated silicone gel enables them to maintain a natural teardrop silhouette and youthful firmness.

Cosmetically, the implant has a tapered upper pole which fills in the top part of the breast more naturally. For this reason, they are very useful for breast reconstruction cases in which a mastectomy is performed. At my Fairfield County plastic surgery practice, I am now replacing breast tissue expanders with these MemoryShape silicone gel implants. In addition, in appropriate patients, I have successfully used these implants for one-stage breast reconstruction, giving a natural reconstructed shape to the breast in a single stage procedure. With regard to cosmetic surgery, these implants are very popular in Europe and Latin America for breast augmentation due to their natural shape and feel.
